Missing Teeth? Got Implant?

THE IMPLANT OPTION

Implants are a great option to replace and restore missing teeth. Science and technology have vastly changed over the past 25 years regarding dental implants and because of this progress and accessibility implants have become a common place option amongst General Practice Dental Offices.

Why Implants you might ask? Well why not! The data backing up the placement and restoration of implants is incredible. Recent statistics show that 69 % of adults from ages 35-44 have had the unfortunate incident of losing at least one permanent tooth whether it be to an accident, genetics, gum disease or tooth decay. Additionally, by the age of 74, 26% of adults have lost all of their permanent teeth. Spanning over the past 50 years there has been extensive clinical research on dental implants. Because of this research, now Dental Implants are an integral part of a patient's dental options with an overall success rate of about 95%.

SAVE OR REPLACE?

Some patients are faced with the dilemma of restoring a severely decayed or broken tooth versus extracting it and placing an implant. Your dentist may recommend an implant and crown as the ideal treatment even though saving the tooth is an option. Why would he/she do this? Many times severely decayed or broken teeth are borderline savable. The extent and location of decay may be so deep it reaches the pulp (location of your nerves and blood vessels) and the bone height. In order to correctly restore the tooth it would require root canal therapy (removal of infected pulp tissue), a build-up (a big filling), crown lengthening (the surgical removal of bone around the tooth to make space for crown placement), and the crown. All of these procedures have a high cost, while the tooth has a low prognosis. Even the most perfect workmanship cannot guarantee the tooth will last beyond 5-10 years. In the future this tooth would be deemed non-restorable if it becomes decayed again. An extraction and implant would be your only option. Because an implant would have a higher prognosis (success rate of 95%), having a "borderline" tooth extracted and restored with an implant is the ideal choice, even if it costs slightly more. The cost of restoring the tooth with an implant may actually be lower in the long run. Many general dentists are certified in sedation and implant placement. It is more cost effective to have your implant placed by a certified general dentist because the fees will be lower than a specialist (oral surgeon or periodontist). The general dentist would also be the same person placing the crown, so you only need to go to one office.

25 Years ago, patients did not have a successful replacement option for missing teeth, other than a fixed multi-unit bridge or removable dentures. Now patients can enjoy the scientific advantages of dental implants and replace just the teeth that are missing and leaving the healthy teeth alone. Not only can you function normally with a crown supported implant, but it acts as a regular tooth!

  1. For those who lost teeth several years ago, it is almost impossible to successfully have dental implants. This is because tooth loss triggers the loss of jaw bone. dental implants orlando
